River basins (catchment areas)
This dataset defines the river basins of Switzerland, representing the uppermost aggregation level of the topographical catchment areas of Swiss waterbodies. It covers large drainage areas, typically exceeding 1000 square kilometers, associated with major watercourses including the Rhine, Aar, Reuss, Limmat, Thur, Rhône, Ticino, Inn, Adda, and Adige. The data is published by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (BAFU) and provides a national-level hydrological reference framework for water management and environmental analysis across Switzerland's major river systems. The river basins form the uppermost aggregation level for the "Topographical catchment areas of Swiss waterbodies" geodata set. The large areas with a surface area of usually more than 1000km² are drained by large watercourses: the Rhine, Aar, Reuss, Limmat, Thur, Rhône, Ticino, Inn, Adda and Adige.
