Official trips of foreign personalities to France (1944-2018)

DatasetDiscovered1/7DownloadSubscribe🇫🇷France

This dataset lists official trips to France by foreign heads of state, heads of government, sovereigns, and religious leaders between 1944 and 2018, compiled by the Official Travel Service under the General Directorate of the National Police and archived at the National Archives. It contains nearly 800 non-exhaustive entries covering only current leaders and officially designated journeys, excluding transit stops and private stays, with fields including country of origin, country code, status, individual, archival record reference, start and end dates, and a link to the National Archives record. Map access by country code is also provided. It is updated as new archival records are transferred, published by the Ministère de la Culture. The official travel service, under the authority of the General Directorate of the National Police, takes care of security measures around foreign personalities during their official trips or private stays. Archival files produced as part of these missions are kept in the National Archives. The various detailed inventories made it possible to establish a structured and detailed chronological list of official trips of foreign personalities between 1944 and 2018. This list of almost 800 trips to France, which does not claim to be exhaustive, concerns only current leaders. As far as possible, only so-called ‘official’ journeys have been retained. This does not apply to one-off journeys in France (transit countries to the American continent or Great Britain) or to private stays. Some foreign leaders (e.g. Léopold Sédar Senghor) stayed in France for several months, alternating between private trips and official visits: In these cases, there is only one "official journey" entry per year. The dataset made available shall consist of the following information: * Country of origin of the individual; * Country code; * Status: Head of State, Head of Government, Sovereign and Religious Leader; * Individual; * Initial content: record in the inventory of archives; * Year of start of official journey; * Start date of official travel; * End date of official travel; * URL of the record of the National Archives; * Rating of the file. Map access is available here, based on the _code country column._ The archives of the Official Travel Service which can be consulted at the National Archives are generally made up of the following documents: detailed travel schedule (sometimes printed brochure), order of official cars, plan of tables, safety notes and correspondence, press clippings. The data will be updated when the official travel service makes subsequent archival payments. Updated on 20/04/2023: addition of 22 official trips betwee.
