A TPO is a formal order made by a local planning authority, such as a borough, district or unitary council, or a national park authority, that protects specified trees, groups of trees or woodlands. Under an order it is generally an offence to cut down, top, lop, uproot, wilfully damage or wilfully destroy a protected tree without the authority's consent.
