This dataset provides the percentage of vegetation stocking along riverbanks in Switzerland. Vegetation cover along rivers provides shade that reduces peak water temperatures, an increasingly important function under global warming, and also helps to reduce bank erosion and retain pollutants. The data indicates how much of the riverside area is covered by such vegetation stocking. It is published by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (BAFU) as part of national environmental and water-management monitoring efforts, and is freely accessible without authentication.Vegetation performs important functions.
