This dataset defines Nitrate Sensitive Areas (NSAs), designated zones covering groundwater sources used for drinking water supply in England. Within these 32 areas, farmers were offered incentives to change agricultural practices in order to reduce nitrate leaching and help stabilise or lower nitrate concentrations. The scheme is now closed to new applicants, but the boundary data remains available for reference. It is maintained by Natural England and the Environment Agency, with attribution required to Natural England and Ordnance Survey, including Crown copyright and database rights where applicable.NSAs are carefully selected areas covering groundwater sources used to supply drinking water. In these areas incentives were offered to farmers to undertake significant changes in agricultural practices to reduce nitrate leaching, thereby helping stabalise or reduce nitrate levels.
