This dataset provides aggregated maps showing fishing activity at speeds of 2-3 knots, associated with swordfish fishing, based on Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) data. The maps display the intensity of VMS signals rather than fishing effort, following a methodology used by the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture. Since most fishing vessels are under 12 metres in length and are not required to carry VMS, the maps represent only a fraction of the total drifting longline fleet activity. The data is published by the Planning Authority and covers national fishing grounds around Malta.These datasets were manipulated and produced in aggregated maps by showing the intensity of VMS (and not the effort) by a methodology used in the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture.
