Environmentally Sensitive Areas (England)
This dataset covers the Environmentally Sensitive Areas (ESAs) of England, a scheme introduced in 1987 to incentivise farmers to adopt practices safeguarding areas of high landscape, wildlife or historic value. The scheme closed to new applicants after being superseded on 3 March 2005 by Defra's Environmental Stewardship Scheme, which incorporated ESAs and Countryside Stewardship Schemes. There were 22 ESAs in England, covering around 10% of agricultural land.
