This spatial dataset, officially named Biodiversity Areas (BioClass), is designed, owned and managed by Coillte, Ireland's state forestry company. It maps biodiversity areas across the Coillte estate, defined as sites managed primarily for nature rather than timber production. Coillte began systematically mapping these areas in 2001, when freelance ecologists were commissioned to survey and classify sites of ecological value on its landholdings.
