This dataset provides a national inventory of ancient and long-established woodland in Ireland, mapping sites of continuous woodland cover dating back to before the mid-1600s, when planting and afforestation became widespread practice. Such woodlands hold particular biological and cultural value, often retaining links to prehistoric wild forest cover and supporting distinctive habitats and species assemblages not typically found in more recently planted woodland. The inventory, compiled in 2010, is delivered as a geospatial API and can be used to identify, locate, and assess these woodland sites for conservation, land-use planning, and environmental research purposes across Ireland.”Ancient woodland refers to those woods that have had a continuous history of cover since before the period when planting and afforestation became common practice (mid‐1600s).
