Yleinen suomalainen asiasanasto on tarkoitettu käytettäväksi kirjojen, artikkeleiden, elektronisen aineiston ja muiden aineistotyyppien indeksointiin sekä tiedonhakuun. Sanasto auttaa tietojen tallentajia ja tiedonhakijoita käyttämään yhteistä kieltä. Lisäksi sen tarkoituksena on toimia perussanastona eri alojen erikoissanastoja laadittaessa. Sanaston laadinnassa on noudatettu Suomenkielisen tesauruksen laatimis- ja ylläpito-ohjeita (SFS 5471). YSA:n kehitys on lopettu toukokuussa 2019. Tuoreet termit lisätään tämä jälkeen vain Yleiseen suomalaiseen ontologiaan
