A 3D mesh is a representation form of a 3D surface model generated from aerial image information. It represents the terrain surface including vegetation, buildings and other artificial objects (e.g. standing cars). For this purpose, adjacent three-dimensional points from the image correlation of the oriented aerial images are connected to a mesh. The mesh surface is then textured with the underlying aerial images. In recent years, 3D city models have been created in the municipal context, which are used as a planning basis for spatial analyses in three-dimensional space and for public relations work, among other things. The 3D mesh of Geobasis NRW is generated for the entire land area of NRW and represents a realistic model at the time of the survey. It serves as an efficient alternative to oblique aerial images and is suitable as a data basis for digital twins.
