Rejestr PRNG składa się z dwóch części obejmujących: Rejestr nazw geograficznych RP zawierający nazwy obiektów geograficznych położonych w całości lub w części na terytorium Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej, w tym na obszarach morskich Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej i administracji morskiej, Rejestr nazw geograficznych świata zawierający polskojęzyczne nazwy obiektów geograficznych położonych poza granicami Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej. Podstawę prawną tworzenia, aktualizacji i weryfikacji, udostępniania danych oraz zakresu informacji gromadzonych w bazie danych PRNG stanowi rozporządzenie Ministra Rozwoju, Pracy i Technologii z dnia 29 stycznia 2021 r. w sprawie państwowego rejestru nazw geograficznych (Dz. U. z 2021 r., poz. 273). Ad.2 Rejestr polskich nazw geograficznych świata zawiera nazwy zestandaryzowane, uchwalone i zalecane do stosowania przez Komisję Standaryzacji Nazw Geograficznych poza Granicami Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej (KSNG). Wszystkie obiekty (nazwy) gromadzone w bazie danych posiadają odniesienie przestrzenne (współrzędne geograficzne). Rejestr obejmuje nazwy obiektów geograficznych, dla których zalecane jest stosowanie polskich nazw. W rejestrze uwzględniono nazwy obiektów ze wszystkich kontynentów, a także nazwy obiektów podmorskich. Aktualizacja bazy danych prowadzona jest na bieżąco, na podstawie uchwał KSNG. Rejestr polskich nazw geograficznych świata można przeglądać z wykorzystaniem usługi WMS:
