Dans la nuit du 24 au 25 juillet 1944, le Lancaster HQ-568 décolle à 21 heures de sa base Mepal dans le sud-est de lAngleterre. Il est chargé de 6 tonnes de bombes quil doit larguer sur Stuttgart.
